Getting Started

Running the demo application

Follow these high-level steps to run the app with the demo data:
  1. Unzip the file to a folder of your choice e.g. c:\slmapviewer. This will create two folders:
    • SLMapViewer1.0.1 and
    • SLMapController
  2. Start IIS Admin and create the following web applications
    • http://localhost/slmv pointing to the SLMapViewer1.0.1 folder
    • http://localhost/slmc pointing to the SLMapController folder
    • NOTE: It is assumed you already have created a virtual directory which will hold all temporary images (i.e. pointing to the IMAGEURL setting in the mapfile)
  3. Edit the web.config in SLMapviewer.Web to your settings:
    • mapfile - full path to the mapfile to use
    • ErrorLogFile - Full path to the log file where any Silverlight - specific errors will be written. Easiest way is to use the temporary image folder
    • mapwidth: Map width and silverlight container
    • mapheight: Map height and silverlight container
    • InitXMin,InitYMin,InitXMax,InitYMax: The maximum map extent allowed (the initial map extent is defined in the mapfile)
    • IdentifyTolerance: The tolerance to be used in the identify tool in map units.
  4. Edit the web.config in SLMapViewerController to change the ErrorLogFile path- usually the same file as in the error log file in SLMapviewer.Web. Any errors occured within request/response actions will be logged here
  5. If you want to use the provided mapfile, you will need to change the following entries:
    • SHAPEPATH to the path where you extracted the data folder
    • IMAGEPATH: the folder where the temporary images will be stored
    • IMAGEURL the virtual web folder for the IMAGEPATH
  6. Copy the Mapserver binaries into the SLMapViewerController\bin folder. The binaries are supplied as a separate zip file (Mapserverbin303.rar)
