Hi Dave,
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I suspect the error has to do with the url path which calls the xml.aspx. Have a look at the XAML control parameters that you have set. Also- r you running it through Visual Studio? Are you able to debug and see where it raises the error?

FYI- We will also building a new version of the slmapviewer which should be out in a month of so which should be a lot more stable.

Dear Pano V,

We are also planning to use SLMapViewer for one of our Web-GIS application using UMN MapServer. While debugging the SLMapViewer application we are getting error message similar to Dave:

Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined....

Although we have created our own Map file (loading GIS data from Oracle Spatial) and modify the web.config file accordingly (extent, height, width etc.) and corresponding DLLs. We are currently using VS 2010 (.Net Framework v4.0) along-with SilverLight v4.0 to compile and debugging the SLMapViewer application.

If possible, please give us some quick resolution on this and if you need to have more clarification on this we can share that too.

Also please intimate us when the newer version of SLMapViewer will be available or it's been there already.

Thanks & Regards

Dave,

Please specify which version of SLMapViewer we have to use to overcome this issue also if you have any updated link from where I can get the newer source for the same, please provide us.

Currently we are using following version:

slmapviewer-49797

Dear Dave/Pano,

Regarding SLMapViewer Application, we have used the following source:

  1. SLMapViewer v. 1.0 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/41756)
  2. SLMapViewer v. 0.1 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/35983)
  3. Change Set 49797 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/changes/49797)

Same error like: Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined.... are there in all mentioned application.

In-case of Change Set 49797 source, we are most probably able to track where the problem is, this is as follows:

Error:

base {System.SystemException} = {System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined. at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind) at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString) at Gaiocorp.SLMapViewer.Legend.LegendSymbol.l...

Change Set:

slmapviewer-49797\0.1:

MapControl.xaml.cs

PopulateLegend() function --> while loop

If possible, please give us some resolution on this ASAP.

Dec 13, 2011 at 6:45 AM

Dave,

One more thing:

When we are trying with SLMapViewer v. 1.0 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/41756) as directed by you then also we are getting the same error like: Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined....

Although, we have modified the web.config file according to our Map file properties and the related path too.

When we are debugging the application the temp image from the map file is being created but in map control it is not coming properly, please shed a light on this.

Hi Alekhya,

I was about to suggest something similar, i.e. to check your mapfile especially the IMAGEPATH and IMAGEURL settings. The error seems to be happening when SLMapviewer is trying to create the legend. All legend symbols (as well as the map image) are created under the IMAGEPATH folder (as *_legxx.png). Are these getting created? Also- the IMAGEPATH must be set as a virtual directory (in IIS). Is this so in your case? In a mapfile I use, I got the following set:

IMAGEPATH "C:\mapdata\ms_tmp\"
IMAGEURL "http://localhost/ms_tmp/"

If I open the IMAGEURL in a browser and point to an legend or map image created, it will display in the browser. e.g. http://localhost/ms_tmp/184442260_leg00.png Does it happen in your case?

Regards,

Pano

Dec 13, 2011 at 9:39 AM

Dear Pano,

Thanks a ton for your kind reply!!

According to our Map file:

IMAGEPATH "C:/ms4w/tmp/ms_tmp/"

#IMAGEURL "/ms_tmp/"

IMAGEURL "http://localhost/ms_tmp/" [after setting the IMAGEPATH as a virtual directory in IIS]

Yes, in our case also the all legend symbols as well as the map image are being created under the IMAGEPATH folder mentioned in the Map file (as *_legxx.png).

But, we have missed to set the IMAGEPATH as a virtual directory in IIS and now we have done the same as directed by you and able to view the legends or map image created inside IMAGEPATH in the browser e.g. http://localhost/ms_tmp/xx.gif

Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined.... This error has been resolved now although still we are getting some error like:

Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: ImageError error #4001 in control 'Silverlight1': AG_E_NETWORK_ERROR

We are using following SLMapViewer Applications (same error in all these three apps):

  1. SLMapViewer v. 1.0 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/41756)
  2. SLMapViewer v. 0.1 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/35983)
  3. Change Set 49797 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/changes/49797)

Please give us some solution on this and thanks once again for contributing your valuable time and share your knowledge with us.

FYI, I have also mailed you the same at: pvoudouris@gaiocorp.com along with the attached error snapshots.

Dear Pano,

First of all, thanks a lot for your suggestions and help!!

As directed, we have created output files in .PNG format instead of .GIF and that problem has been resolved.

Now, the SLMapViewer Application is working partially (SLMapViewer v1.0: http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/41756) as we are able to view map in the map control.

But while doing basic GIS operations like query, identify etc. we are getting some error like:

msOracleSpatialLayerGetShape(): OracleSpatial error. Error parsing OracleSpatial DATA variable for query. To execute query functions you need to define one unique column [USING UNIQUE <#column>]

I think we have to modify below mentioned section in our map file:

CONNECTIONTYPE oraclespatial

CONNECTION "ofp/ofp@NESTIT-337"

DATA "GEOMETRY FROM URBAN_UGL USING SRID 8307"

PS: It will be something like: DATA "GEOMETRY FROM URBAN_UGL USING UNIQUE MYTABLE_ID SRID 8307"

FYI, herewith I have attached some snapshots and our Map file, please find the attachments.

Thanks once again for your valuable help….

Dear Pano,

Hope you are doing well!!

Although we are able to build both the applications i.e., Change Set 49797 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/changes/49797) and SLMapViewer v1.0 (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/41756) but still there are some issues related to some toolbar components in both apps including some clarifications. These are as follows:

1) Draw a point on map: Getting error as mention in the snapshot named as slmv_v1.0_error.JPG

2) Legend/TOC is not floating/dockable as shown in one demo i.e., http://www.mapoholic.com/slmapview/

3) Query by Attributes is not giving desired results

4) While using Identify tool it is not selecting only one feature rather it is selecting some multiple features (may be some modification is required with tolerance value)

5) How to change the active layer on map

6) What is load map text box which is mentioned below the map control

Request you to please shed a light on this, if possible.

Also FYI, we have downloaded your new components on SLMapViewer i.e., SLMapViewer Demo App (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/78841) and Change Set 64170 for SLMapViewer Demo App (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/changes/64170). Hi Alekhya,
First of all I suggest you start using the Demo App (or the latest source).

As for your questions:

1. Draw a point error. To draw a point, the map file needs to have a feature point layer defined. For an example have a look at the mapfile provided as part of the Demo download under the data folder.

2. In the previous release this was controlled by the web.config (and hence Silverlight params) in InternalControls parameter. This is still there but not really used in the latest version

3. Query by attributes- dont understand this. What are the 'desired results'?

4. Identify. Yes. Tolerance is defined in metadata section for the layer in the mapfile. If none is found, it will use a value of 10. If your data is in lat/lon this will select withing 10 degrees! So, yes, there will be a lot of features selected.

5. Active Layer. Click on its name in the legend. Layer name will turn red.

6. Not sure about this. You mean the Wait Window bit? This is just the window that pops up when the map is loading.

Hope this helps,
Pano

Subject: Regarding latest SLMapViewer Demo Application

Dear Pano,

Hope you are doing well!!

As discussed, we have downloaded the following latest applications:

  1. SLMapviewer Demo app
  2. Change Set 64170

Currently, we are working with SLMapviewer Demo app. Also we have followed those steps as mentioned in the read-me file provided with the download. We have modified the followings (we have tried with your map file and our own map file too):

MapfilesFolder: We had given the map file folder location (for our map file, it like: C:\ms4w\Apache\htdocs)

Mapfile: Our map file (i.e., OrSpatial.map), we have tried your map file too given with the download

ErrorLogFile: Modified (C:\ms4w\tmp\ms_tmp\ ms_log.txt)

XMLUrl: Need your clarification, you have mentioned like: http://localhost:4072; what should we do, is it like our IIS virtual directory like: http://nestit-213/ms_tmp/, please suggest.

IMAGEPATH: Modified accordingly as done it earlier.

IMAGEURL: Modified accordingly as done it earlier.

We are able to build the complete project successfully by configuring those required DLLs but at the starting point the ERROR we are getting is like this, may be because of map control is not getting the required data source/image:

"the remote server returned an error: not found"

In Default.aspx.cs it mentioned as follows, please clarify the same, if possible:

// Make sure the base url sent to the silverlight control is correct.

// Otherwise you get the "the remote server returned an error: not found"

// when trying to do the async request to xml.aspx

if (appPath == "/") { appPath = string.Empty; }

//string baseUrl = Request.Url.GetLeftPart(UriPartial.Authority) + appPath;

string baseUrl = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["XMLUrl"];

Request you to suggest us on the same, so that we can proceed with....

Thnx in advance.

Hi Alekhya,

We are working on an new version as Pano mentioned which will be more stable.

I would like to know if you are running on a 64bit or 32bit server, if you are on 64bit can you please try to set the application pool to run on 32bit?

Dear Pano/Elias,

Currently we are working with SLMapviewer Demo app (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/78841) in VS 2010 platform on 32 bit system.

As directed by Pano and flow mentioned in the Read-me file, we have done all the necessary modifications and configured the required DLLs and MapServer binaries. We are using our own map file which I have already shared in my earlier mail in which we are getting the spatial data from Oracle Spatial database/table using OGR connection.

As mentioned, in XMLUrl (under web.config file of SLMapViewer.Web project) we have mentioned like XMLUrl = http://localhost:4072 and SLMapViewerControllerproject path is accessible from this path in web browser too as shown in my snapshot (SLMV_Latest3). But in when I am trying to open xml.aspx in browser from the path, it is throwing some runtime error as mention in snapshot (SLMV_Latest4).

By define this above mentioned path, we are getting the error like: the remote server returned an error: not found” which I have mentioned earlier.

If, we create a new xml.aspx page using the existing one inside SLMapViewer.Web project, then it is working somewhat as mentioned in the snapshots (SLMV_Latest1 and SLMV_Latest2) in which some toolbar components are not visible due to page load event.

If possible, could you please us some solution on this which we are missing may be else we can use the components of SLMapViewerController project underSLMapViewer.Web project as it was in earlier version.

Request you once again to do the needful in a bit urgent basis as we have to proceed further and if you are available for an online session with us we can co-ordinate the same officially.

Hi Alekhya,
The 4072 port is available only if you run the app from within VS2010. Its just the port assigned automatically to the SLMapviewerController web app. What happens if you create a virtual folder in IIS for the controller e.g. http://localhost/slmvc which will point to the SLMapviewerController app. Then try http://localhost/slmvc/xmls.asp. You should get a message similar to 'no route element' (as it expects an XML string). Does this work?

Pano

Dear Pano,

Thanks a lot for your kind reply!!

It is to inform you that we are using VS 2010 to build the existing solution (i.e., SLMapViewer\SLMapviewer\SLMapViewer.sln).

As directed by you, we have create a virtual directory in IIS for the controller project like: "http://localhost/slmvc" as shown in attached snaps (slmvc_1.JPG and slmvc_2.JPG) and getting some xml related error when we are trying to open that xml.aspx page in web browser may be like you have mentioned.

When we are debugging our application, we are getting the baseURL correct as mentioned in web.config file under SLMapViewer.Web project, please refer attached snaps (webconfig_3.JPG and baseURL_4.JPG). But this time the earlier error has gone which was “the remote server returned an error: not found” and now the new error occurred like: Access to the path "C:\ms4w\tmp\ms_tmp\ms_log.txt" is denied (although it has came earlier too and we have resolve this somehow).

Please look into those attached snaps and again we are looking for your further help on this, if possible….

Thanks anyway.

Dear Pano,

Hope you are doing well!!

As discussed, we have tried with latest SLMapviewer Demo App (http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/releases/view/78841) and also sorted out the problem that we were facing regarding SLMapviewer Controller project and now it is working as http://localhost:4072. Also we have tried with the map file provided with the download and our map file too and we are getting the output as mentioned in attached snaps (1. provided_mapfile.JPG and 3. our_mapfile.JPG). But we are missing few map tools this time like Identify,Select FeaturesHyperlink as mentioned in attached snaps (2. map_tool_missing_1.JPG and 4. map_tool_missing_2.JPG) although for the provided map file the Push-pinfunctionality is working fine.

Request you to please look into this, if possible.

Also, with the same configuration when we are trying this in a separate system having VS 2010, we are getting some Security Error, is it related to CrossDomain.xml under controller project. As mentioned in Read-me file, we have copied all the MapServer binaries into the bin folder of the SLMapviewer controller project but in controller project we have to replace some DLLs like gdal17 with newer gdal18, is it correct or we have to use all the latest binaries. If you have the MapServer binaries used for this project, please share the same with us.

Also, request you to provide us some document on this latest application and coding aspects like code walk-through, if available and relationship between all these project under the solution like relationship between SLMapviewer and SLMapviewer Controller project as we are newer to this kind of application particularly with asp.net and open source.

Your valuable response and suggestions would be highly appreciated....

Alekhya Datta

Hi Alekhya,
Re tools- they will appear if you define an active layer (by clicking on it's name on the legend) For the hyperlink tool it depends on the metadata in the map file for each layer. Explained here: http://slmapviewer.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Mapfile-specific%20functionality&referringTitle=Documentation
As for the documentation, yes, needs to be updated on codeplex but didn't get a chance yet. Watch this space.
For the security error u probably miss some of the binaries. Just make sure the controller projects works standalone as per previous mails

Pano

Dear Pano,

Thanks a lot for your reply!!

We have delayed a bit to get back to you.

Regarding the map tools: Select Features, Identify and Select By Attribute are coming as mentioned by you. We have used your map file as well as our map file using shapefile, oracle spatial and postgis/postgres connections. Both map files have been attached with this e-mail (slmapview_demo.map and OrSpatial.map).

Identify: The identify features tool along with zoom to select feature is working properly with your map file but in case of our map file only identify features are showing in grid but not the zoom to select feature. (Error mentioned in attached snap: 2. Memory Error_Identify_ZoomToSelect.JPG)

Select Features: The select features tool along with zoom to select feature is working properly with your map file but in case of our map file it is not working as mentioned in attached snap: 1. Memory Error_Select_Features.JPG. Should we need to modify something in map file or in solution.

Select By Attribute: This tool is not working in either cases (Error mentioned in attached snap: 3. Memory Error_Attribute_Query.JPG).

Other map tools:

Hyperlink: We don’t have any option in our map file, but it would be great if explain us more about the same and the advantages of having hyperlink so that we can use the same.

Pushpin: It is also working fine with your map file but we have include one layer section for pushpin in our map file using which we can draw the pin on the map but while deleting the same we are getting the error as mention in attached snap: 4. Pushpin_Error.JPG

Also please guide us any changes are required in MapServer.cs file if while using PostGIS connection as mentioned in attached snap: 5. Data_Connection.JPG.

Request you to do the needful for us.

Hi Alekhya,

I suspect that the memory errors are because the mapserver binaries do not support Oracle spatial layers. Have a read on the mapserver documentation on which dlls to replace.

PostGIS layers- dont think there's anything that needs to be changed. Does it not work?

Pin layer - if you put your mapfile on the same folder as the demo one and set the SYMBOLSET on the mapfile to the same setting as the demo and change the symbol to pin it should work. I really can't comment on your folder structure and where you keep the images.

As for the hyperlink. As mentioned- read the SLMapviewer documentation on codeplex. It should have all the information you want.

Also- there is a new (compiled) version out - 1.0.1. AND updated documentation. You can use this but NOTE that it is geared to use the LATEST MS4W mapserver binaries (3.0.3). The ones provided in codeplex still do not support Oracle layers so you have to download them from maptools.org/ms4w.

In any case I would strongly suggest to read the mapserver documentation and especially the mapfile settings.

Let me know if there are any problems with PostGIS layers and I will have a look.... eventually!

Regards,
Pano

Dear Pano,

Hope you are doing well!!

We need to have your help related to UMN MapServer.

The requirement is:

We have some feature class (GIS data in ESRI Shape-file format or in Oracle Spatial) and the corresponding map configuration file (map file) with those layer definitions. But we need to overlay those feature class on a background layer such as Google Maps or MS Bing Maps using tile/wms services. Our map file has been attached with this e-mail.

Pertaining our same map file and the SLMV application, whether we can able to get any background layer from the above mentioned services by doing some modifications in our map file as well as in SLMV application, please suggest us the method for the same, if possible.

Also we are planning to go ahead with SLMV project to cater our requirements with other functionalities and we are now in prototype/R&D stage. Therefore we need to have your extended support and any agreement related to this project we need to follow-up with before the final implementation of our project. If possible, can we have some telecon regarding the technical issues related to SLMV project.

To prepare our project SRS, we need to have a look in your other application i.e., Asset and Defect Management (http://www.mapoholic.com/mams3/Login.aspx) which is not working in your site. Hence, request you to send us some snaps or source for the same so that we can have some idea how to include SLMV into project like you did in this case, I guess. It will really help us to design our system to cater the requirements.
